Wir sind über dem Berg – und gehen neue Wege
Ab dem 15. Tag ging es dem Käpt´n zusehends besser. Die guten Zeiten am Tag wurden immer etwas länger und die Auslastung für den Kopf sowie unsere physiotherapeutischen Einheiten haben die Motivation vom Käpt´n deutlich gesteigert.
Ein Buggy bringt neue Freiheiten
Seit einiger Zeit haben wir einen Fahrradanhänger*, den ich auch gut schieben kann. So sind wir beweglicher und flexibler, können wieder am Leben teilnehmen. Ist er fit, steigt der Käpt´n aus und läuft ein paar Schritte. Er kann seine Hundesachen machen und ein wenig die Umwelt erkunden. Zugleich hat er seine Sicherheitszone, wenn unbekannte und unangeleinte Hunde des Weges kommen. In Hundebegegnungen hätte er zur Zeit nichts entgegenzusetzen. Deswegen schütze ich ihn da sehr.
Phenospiegel im therapeutischen Bereich
Am 21. Juli waren wir auf dem Weg zu einer Fortbildung noch in der TiHo, um dort den Spiegel von Pheno in Käpt´ns Blut messen zu lassen. Dieser ist im therapeutischen Bereich, dass heißt die bisherige Dosis bleibt so wie sie aktuell ist. Parallel dazu schleiche ich das bisherige Medikament weiterhin aus. Davon bekommt er noch 2/3 seiner ursprünglichen Dosis. Glücklicherweise kamen bisher keine Anfälle.
Seminare machen Sorgen
Die lang ersehnte und supergute Fortbildung bei Chirag Patel mussten wir bedauerlicherweise abbrechen, denn der Kärpt´n hatte als immerhin seminarerprobter Hund starken Durchfall – mit Malheur 💩in der Unterkunft 🫣. Wir sind also am Sonntag lieber wieder nach Hause gefahren. Ich wollte keinen Anfall provozieren.
Erste große Runde im Wald
Vor drei Tagen waren wir sogar im Wald und haben dort eine Runde gedreht, die an frühere Zeiten erinnerte. Danach war er allerdings k.o.
Wir sind also, was die Nebenwirkungen von Phenobarbital angeht, wohl über dem Berg. Auch wenn er noch nicht der Alte ist und wahrscheinlich nie wieder sein wird, so haben wir doch wieder Lebensqualität und ja zumindest die Chance auf eine anfallsfreie Zeit.
Nichtsdestotrotz ist und bleibt die Epilepsie eine völlig unberechenbare Krankheit und das, was heute gut aussieht, kann sich morgen schon ganz anders darstellen.
Das Leben mit Epilepsie ist ein Leben mit einer tickenden Zeitbombe.
Trotz all der Belastungen, die diese Krankheit mit sich bringt, konnte ich – auch durch die Auseinandersetzung mit der Epilepsie – Strategien aufbauen, die mir den Umgang mit belastenden Situationen erleichtern.

We’re over the hump!
Starting from day 15, the Captain’s condition has been steadily improving. The good moments during the day are getting longer, and the Captain’s motivation has significantly increased for mental exercises and physiotherapy sessions.
A buggy brings new freedoms
Recently, we acquired a bicycle trailer* that I can easily push. This has made us more mobile and flexible, allowing us to participate in life again. When he feels up to it, the Captain gets out and takes a few steps. He can attend to his doggy needs and explore the environment a bit. At the same time, he has his safety zone when encountering unfamiliar and unleashed dogs along the way. Currently, he wouldn’t be able to handle encounters with other dogs, so I’m very protective in those situations.
Therapeutic range of Phenobarbital
On July 21st, we went to TiHo to have the level of Phenobarbital in the Captain’s blood measured while on our way to a training session. The level was within the therapeutic range, which means the current dosage will remain as it is. Meanwhile, I continue to gradually reduce the previous medication. He is still receiving 2/3 of his original dosage. Thankfully, there have been no seizures so far.
Seminars are causing worries
Unfortunately, we had to cut short the long-awaited and excellent training with Chirag Patel, as the Captain, despite being a seasoned seminar-going dog, had severe diarrhea – an accident 💩 in the accommodation 🫣. So, on Sunday, we decided to drive back home. I didn’t want to trigger a seizure.
First big round in the forest
Three days ago, we even went to the forest and took a walk reminiscent of earlier times. However, afterward, he was exhausted.
Regarding the side effects of Phenobarbital, it seems we are past the worst. Although he’s not back to his old self and probably never will be, we have regained some quality of life and at least the chance of a seizure-free period. Nevertheless, epilepsy remains an entirely unpredictable disease, and what looks good today may change completely tomorrow.
Life with epilepsy is living with a ticking time bomb.
In English: Despite all the challenges that come with this illness, I have been able to develop strategies, partly through dealing with epilepsy, that make it easier for me to cope with stressful situations.

¡Hemos superado el obstáculo!
A partir del día 15, la condición del Capitán ha estado mejorando constantemente. Los buenos momentos durante el día se están alargando, y la motivación del Capitán ha aumentado significativamente para los ejercicios mentales y las sesiones de fisioterapia.
Un cochecito trae nuevas libertades
Recientemente, adquirimos un remolque de bicicleta* que puedo empujar fácilmente. Esto nos ha vuelto más móviles y flexibles, permitiéndonos participar nuevamente en la vida. Cuando se siente bien, el Capitán sale y da unos pasos. Puede atender a sus necesidades de perro y explorar un poco el entorno. Al mismo tiempo, tiene su zona de seguridad cuando se encuentra con perros desconocidos y sin correa en el camino. Actualmente, no podría enfrentarse a otros perros, así que soy muy protector en esas situaciones.
Rango terapéutico de Fenobarbital
El 21 de julio, fuimos a TiHo para medir el nivel de Fenobarbital en la sangre del Capitán mientras nos dirigíamos a una sesión de entrenamiento. El nivel se encontraba dentro del rango terapéutico, lo que significa que la dosis actual se mantendrá tal como está. Mientras tanto, sigo reduciendo gradualmente la medicación anterior. Todavía está recibiendo 2/3 de su dosis original. Afortunadamente, hasta ahora no ha tenido convulsiones.
Los seminarios están causando preocupaciones
Lamentablemente, tuvimos que interrumpir el tan esperado y excelente entrenamiento con Chirag Patel, ya que el Capitán, a pesar de ser un perro experimentado en asistir a seminarios, tuvo una fuerte diarrea – un accidente 💩 en el alojamiento 🫣. Así que el domingo decidimos regresar a casa. No quería provocar una convulsión.
Primera gran vuelta en el bosque
Hace tres días, incluso fuimos al bosque y dimos un paseo que recordó tiempos anteriores. Sin embargo, después de eso, estaba agotado.
En cuanto a los efectos secundarios del Fenobarbital, parece que hemos superado lo peor. Aunque no ha vuelto a ser como antes y probablemente nunca lo será, hemos recuperado cierta calidad de vida y al menos la posibilidad de un período sin convulsiones. Sin embargo, la epilepsia sigue siendo una enfermedad totalmente impredecible, y lo que parece ir bien hoy puede cambiar por completo mañana.
Vivir con epilepsia es vivir con una bomba de tiempo en marcha.
A pesar de todas las cargas que esta enfermedad conlleva, pude desarrollar estrategias, también a través de enfrentarme a la epilepsia, que me facilitan lidiar con situaciones difíciles.
