Epilepsie beim Hund und Behandlung mit Luminal
Update und Dank
Eingangs möchte ich mich bei den vielen, vielen Menschen für die aufbauenden Worte, das Daumen und Pfoten drücken und die große Empathie, die mich in den Kommentaren bei Instagram und Facebook aber auch auf anderem Wege erreicht haben, bedanken! Das war eine große emotionale Hilfe nach dem erneuten Anfall. Epilepsie ist eine fordernde Krankheit und jeder Kommentar hilft mit der emotionalen Belastung umzugehen.
Und Probs an Frau Meyerhoff, unserer @vetspecialistagainstepilepsy , die sich uns – trotz Notdienst und ständig klingelndem Telefon – mit einer bewundernswerten Ruhe gewidmet hat. Sie, liebe Frau Meyerhoff, sind die 1:40 h Fahrtweg allemal wert!
Wie geht es nun weiter?
Da der letzte große und auch sehr schlimme Anfall erst eine Woche vor dem gestrigen stattfand und der davor sich Ende Mai ereignete, plädierte Käpt’ns @vetspecialistagainstepilepsy für eine medikamentöse Umstellung. Ich hatte das schon erwartet und befürchtet. Wir wechseln nun zu Phenobarbital, einem Medikament mit erheblichen Nebenwirkungen insbesondere zu Beginn der Therapie. Epifellbesitzer sprechen vom Tal der Tränen, das man in dieser Zeit mit seinem Hund durchschreiten muss.
Die meisten Hunde können zu Beginn nicht laufen, verändern sich sehr im Wesen und/oder werden inkontinent.
Nach der zweiten Gabe – ich habe heute Morgen begonnen – rutschen ihm die Hinterbeine weg und ihm hängt die Zunge aus dem Maul. Die Nebenwirkungen passen zum Medikament: Gerade die Ataxie ist eine wesentliche Nebenwirkung von Phenobarbital. Sonst ist er schlapp, trickst mal kurz mit mir und ist insgesamt sehr anhänglich. Und ich ärgere mich, das ich das Tragen auf der Schulter nicht besser geübt habe. Die glatten Treppen hier wird er wohl nicht sicher herunterkommen.
Da Phenobarbital sich langsam im Körper aufbaut, bekommt er parallel sein bisheriges Medikament weiter. In zwei Wochen beginnt dann dessen Ausschleichen.
Morgen muss er für zwei bis drei Stunden alleine bleiben. Ich hoffe, dass er das gut schafft.

Firstly, I would like to thank the many, many people for their encouraging words, thumbs up, and paw presses, as well as the great empathy I received in the comments on Instagram and Facebook, as well as through other means. It was a great emotional support after the seizure happened again. Epilepsy is a challenging disease, and every comment helps to cope with the emotional burden.
And props to Ms. Meyerhoff, our @vetspecialistagainstepilepsy, who dedicated herself to us with admirable composure despite being on call and the phone constantly ringing. You, dear Ms. Meyerhoff, are worth the 1 hour and 40-minute drive!
What happens next?
Since the last big and very severe seizure occurred just one week before yesterday’s incident, and the one before that happened at the end of May, Captain @vetspecialistagainstepilepsy recommended a medication change. I had already expected and feared that. We are now switching to Phenobarbital, a medication with significant side effects, especially at the beginning of the treatment. Epileptic dog owners refer to it as the “valley of tears” that you have to go through with your dog during this time.
Most dogs cannot walk at the beginning, undergo significant behavioral changes, and/or become incontinent.
After the second dose – I started this morning – his hind legs are slipping, and his tongue is hanging out of his mouth. The side effects match the medication: Ataxia, in particular, is a significant side effect of Phenobarbital. Otherwise, he is weak, briefly tricks me, and is overall very affectionate. And I’m annoyed that I didn’t practice carrying him on my shoulder more. He probably won’t come down the smooth stairs safely.
Since Phenobarbital slowly builds up in the body, he will continue to receive his previous medication in parallel. In two weeks, we will begin tapering off the previous medication.
Tomorrow, he has to be alone for two to three hours. I hope he manages that well.

En primer lugar, quiero agradecer a todas las personas por las palabras de ánimo, los pulgares y las patas cruzadas, y la gran empatía que he recibido en los comentarios en Instagram, Facebook y en otros medios. Fue una gran ayuda emocional después de la recurrencia del ataque. La epilepsia es una enfermedad exigente, y cada comentario ayuda a sobrellevar la carga emocional.
Y un reconocimiento a la Sra. Meyerhoff, nuestra @vetspecialistagainstepilepsy, quien, a pesar de estar en servicio de urgencias y con el teléfono sonando constantemente, nos atendió con una admirable calma. Usted, querida Sra. Meyerhoff, vale la pena las 1:40 horas de viaje sin duda alguna.
¿Qué sigue ahora?
Dado que el último gran y muy grave ataque ocurrió solo una semana antes del de ayer, y el anterior se produjo a finales de mayo, la Dra. @vetspecialistagainstepilepsy sugirió un cambio en la medicación. Ya me lo esperaba y temía. Ahora estamos cambiando a Phenobarbital, un medicamento con efectos secundarios significativos, especialmente al inicio del tratamiento. Los propietarios de perros con epilepsia hablan del “Valle de lágrimas” que se debe atravesar durante este tiempo con el perro.
La mayoría de los perros no pueden caminar al principio, cambian mucho en su comportamiento y/o se vuelven incontinentes.
Después de la segunda dosis, que comencé esta mañana, sus patas traseras se deslizan y su lengua cuelga de su boca. Los efectos secundarios son consistentes con el medicamento: la ataxia es un efecto secundario significativo de Phenobarbital. Por lo demás, está débil, juguetea brevemente conmigo y en general es muy cariñoso. Y me arrepiento de no haber practicado mejor llevarlo en mi hombro. Probablemente no podrá bajar de manera segura por las escaleras lisas aquí.
Como Phenobarbital se acumula lentamente en el cuerpo, continuará tomando su medicamento anterior al mismo tiempo. En dos semanas, comenzaremos a reducir gradualmente ese medicamento.
Mañana tendrá que quedarse solo durante dos o tres horas. Espero que lo supere bien.
