Epilepsie beim Hund und die Umstellung auf Luminal – Tag 3
Seit Mittwoch gebe ich nun das neue Medikament Phenobarbital und nach zwei recht guten Tagen kommen die ersten stärkeren Nebenwirkungen.
Das Medikament macht ihn recht schlapp und er wirkt recht nebelig im Kopf. Das Erregungsniveau ist deutlich herabgesetzt, was ja im Sinne der anfallsunterdrückenden Wirkung von Phenobarbital Sinn macht. Er liegt also viel rum und schaut ein wenig dizzy drein, ist aber grundsätzlich guter Dinge.
Erste Nebenwirkungen von Phenobarbital
Was jedoch auch zunimmt ist die Ataxie, also die Koordinationsstörungen in den Beinen, insbesondere der Hinterhand.
Weil schwimmen gut bei Ataxie helfen soll und er das gerne macht, waren wir also am See. Das hat er gut angenommen und hat – selbstredend mit Schwimmweste – ca. 10 Minuten lang seine Runden gedreht. Das ist für ihn kurz, normalerweise schwimmt er 20 bis 30 Minuten. Ich fand gut, dass er so gut auf sich aufgepasst hat und kürzer getreten ist. Wir mussten noch ein kurzes Stück zurücklaufen, auch das hat gut geklappt.
Auf dem Weg vom Auto nach Hause ist er dann jedoch richtig getorkelt, ich hörte die Krallen auf dem Boden kratzen und hier in der Wohnung konnte er nicht mehr richtig stehen. Nach ausgiebigem Schlafen war das wiederum sogleich besser.
Die glatten Treppen hier im Haus läuft er sogar auch noch alleine runter!
Fazit
Bisher (!) sind die Nebenwirkungen erträglich (toi,toi,toi) und ich habe mir die Phase deutlich schlimmer vorgestellt. Ich hoffe, dass das so bleibt, bin mir jedoch zugleich bewusst, dass wir erst beim dritten Tag mit Pheno angekommen sind.

Since Wednesday, I have been giving the new medication phenobarbital to my dog, and after two fairly good days, the first stronger side effects are appearing.
The medication is making him quite lethargic, and he seems a bit foggy in his head. The level of excitement has noticeably decreased, which makes sense in terms of the seizure-suppressing effect of phenobarbital. So, he spends a lot of time lying around and appears a bit dizzy, but overall, he is in good spirits.
First side effects of phenobarbital:
However, the ataxia, meaning the coordination disorders in his legs, especially in the hind legs, is also increasing.
Because swimming is said to be helpful for ataxia and he enjoys it, we went to the lake. He took to it well and swam around for about 10 minutes, wearing a life jacket, of course. That is short for him; usually, he swims for 20 to 30 minutes. I appreciated that he took care of himself and didn’t overdo it. We had to walk back a short distance, and that went well too.
However, on the way from the car to home, he stumbled quite a bit, and I heard his claws scraping on the floor. In the apartment, he couldn’t stand properly anymore. After a good amount of sleep, though, he improved again.
He can still manage to go down the smooth stairs in the house on his own!
Conclusion:
So far (!), the side effects are tolerable, and I imagined this phase to be much worse. I hope it stays this way, but at the same time, I am aware that we have only reached the third day with phenobarbital.

Epilepsia en perros y la transición a fenobarbital (Luminal) – 3er día.
Desde el miércoles, he estado administrando el nuevo medicamento fenobarbital y después de dos días bastante buenos, están apareciendo los primeros efectos secundarios más fuertes.
El medicamento lo está dejando bastante débil y parece tener la mente nublada. El nivel de excitación ha disminuido notablemente, lo cual tiene sentido considerando el efecto de supresión de las convulsiones del fenobarbital. Así que pasa mucho tiempo tumbado y parece un poco desorientado, pero en general, está de buen ánimo.
Primeros efectos secundarios del fenobarbital:
Sin embargo, también ha aumentado la ataxia, es decir, los trastornos de coordinación en sus patas, especialmente en las traseras.
Dado que se supone que nadar es beneficioso para la ataxia y a él le gusta, fuimos al lago. Lo aceptó bien y nadó alrededor durante unos 10 minutos, llevando puesto un chaleco salvavidas, por supuesto. Eso es poco tiempo para él, normalmente nada durante 20 a 30 minutos. Me alegró que se cuidara bien y no se excediera. Tuvimos que caminar un tramo corto de regreso, y eso también funcionó bien.
Sin embargo, en el camino de vuelta del auto a casa, se tambaleó bastante, y escuché sus uñas raspar en el suelo. En el departamento, ya no podía pararse correctamente. Después de dormir lo suficiente, mejoró de nuevo.
¡Incluso puede bajar solo las escaleras lisas aquí en casa!
Conclusión:
Hasta ahora, los efectos secundarios son tolerables, y me imaginé esta fase mucho peor. Espero que siga así, pero al mismo tiempo, soy consciente de que apenas hemos llegado al tercer día con fenobarbital.
